Gallery Philippe Altmeyer
The concept of the gallery is to offer its customers a wide selection of ancient and modern prints to collect, at affordable prices.
After many years spent collecting prints, visiting auction houses, print dealers, antique dealers, museums and many exhibitions on the art of printmaking, Philippe Altmeyer decided to open his gallery on the net. The gallery was founded in 2021.
It offers a wide choice of different techniques: etchings, lithographs, serigraphs, aquatints, mezzotints and woodcuts.
The gallery wishes to present engravings of Masters but also prints of less known engravers but whose works present a real artistic interest.
Each print is presented on our site with all the information allowing to identify the print and to appreciate the quality of the printing and the state of conservation.
Beyond his interest in the print trade, Philippe Altmeyer has a wider commitment to art: he has been appointed several times in Paris and in the provinces as curator of exhibitions devoted to the painter and caricaturist Honoré Daumier (1808-1879), he has written a book on this artist entitled ‘Daumier et la photographie’ (Editor ‘Rumeurs des âges’ La Rochelle).
He has written other books on art and various articles. A book on the painter Hubert Robert, ‘Hubert Robert des Lumières’ from the same publisher. With the historian Marcel Dorigny, he shared the writing of the book ‘L’esclavage – Illustrations et caricatures – 1750-1850’ published by Geste. This book was the foundation for the exhibition they conceived and which was held in July 2021 at the Médiathèque de La Rochelle on the theme of colonial slavery.
Philippe Altmeyer regularly writes articles on his website about prints, their history and their relationship with other media: the history of vellum paper used by printers, the first great North American collections of European prints, etc.
Prints are accurately described and shipped quickly, at reasonable prices.
