Exhibition ALBRECHT DÜRER – ENGRAVING AND RENAISSANCE at the Château de Chantilly (France) – From June 4th to October 2nd 2022.
Considered a universal genius during his lifetime, Albrecht Dürer still fascinates. Through his engravings, he helped shape the European Renaissance by placing himself at the heart of artistic exchanges. Too rarely exhibited in France, this immense artist is exceptionally honored in Chantilly, with more than 200 works! For the first time, two major collections of works by Dürer in France are brought together. These are the collections of the Musée Condé in Chantilly and the Bibliothèque nationale de France. The two institutions are joining forces to highlight the dazzling graphic art of the German master. This is placed at the heart of his own artistic practice and the upheavals of his time.
At the heart of Albrecht Dürer’s creation: the engraving revolution. Dürer was one of the first artists to elevate engraving to the level of other arts. An almost complete overview of his work is offered. Many of his series (The Apocalypse, The Life of the Virgin, and The Great Passion on wood) are compared with each other. In addition to the universal masterpieces (The Melancholy or Saint Jerome in his cell), there are some lesser known compositions. Also included are some of the creations of contemporary German, Italian and Flemish engravers who influenced Dürer’s art, who drew on it or sought to emulate it. The Chantilly exhibition allows us to consider in a new light the central place of the immense draftsman and engraver that was Albrecht Dürer.
