Description

Étienne-Claude Voysard (1746-1812?)

Étienne-Claude Voysard : Breastfeeding encouraged.

Etching

Proof on laid paper, before the title and the address but with the engraver’s mentions on the right ‘E. Voysard Sculpsit’ and on the left ‘A. Borel Invenit & delineavit, 1784’.

Propaganda print in favor of the “starving” (Relief for nursing mothers) by Voysard after Antoine Borel (1743-1810), who drew the model in 1784. The title is: ‘L’alaitement maternel encouragé’ then in the center the following text: ‘A sensitive philosopher indicates to the charity the objects on which it must pour its gifts. The Comedy under the figure of Figaro holds big bags. She spreads one at the feet of several mothers who are breastfeeding their children. Above the Philosopher is the statue of humanity bearing these words’. Then these words: ‘Relief for nursing mothers’.

The address (missing here) is in principle the following one : ‘à Paris, chez l’auteur, rue de la Harpe, no 18, vis-à-vis la rue Serpente, 1784’.

Sheet size : H. 327 mm x W. 405 mm – dimensions at the plate mark : H. 310 mm x W. 465 mm

Condition; some scattered foxing in the margins.
