Jacques Beltrand : Beethoven

Original wood engraving in chiaroscuro, printed in two shades of grey-green on unglued chine paper.

Proof before the letter, signed in ink under the subject ‘Jacques Beltrand’. It seems that a small edition of 40 or 50 plates was produced with the artist’s signature before 1907, perhaps in 1905.

Print not to be confused with the original woodcut printed on wallpaper and published in 1907 by the Gazette des Beaux-Arts. On this print the name Beethoven is printed under the image. At the bottom right of the sheet are the words in light blue ‘Original woodcut by Jacques Beltrand for LA LEGENDE DOREE DES GRANDS HOMMES Sté Nationale des Beaux-Arts Salon de 1907’.

Size of the sheet : H. 305 mm x W. 210 mm – Size of the subject : H. 138 mm x W. 127 mm.

Condition : the sheet is delicately glued by its two upper corners on a folder with vellum paper flap. A trace of black ink at the bottom of the folder which does not affect the leaf.
