Light ochre aquatint, proof printed on wove paper watermarked with the name of the artist and the publisher Gustave Pellet (Watermark ‘Pellet et Legrand’ with a goose surmounted by a fleur de lys), proof signed in the print and also signed in pencil with the numbering 50/70 in the lower margin.
Engraving drawn in 1893 and engraved in 1911 according to the mentions made by the artist in the print itself. Edition by Gustave Pellet (1859-1919). Presence in the lower margin of the stamped mark in red ink of Gustave Pellet (L. 1193)

Louis Auguste Mathieu Legrand is a French painter, draftsman and engraver born in Dijon on September 28, 1863 and died in Livry-Gargan on June 12, 1951. In 1884, he moves to Paris and learn the techniques of engraving with Félicien Rops, his favorite technique being aquatint. In 1900, he receives a bronze medal at the Universal Exhibition in Paris.
Gustave Pellet is a publisher of books and prints since 1887. He publishs some works of Félicien Rops but Pellet is especially the official publisher, and the only one, of the works of Louis Legrand. Finally, Pellet is the first publisher of Toulouse-Lautrec’s color lithographs; he publishs twenty works, the most famous of this artist, the first ones dating from 1892. Around this time he also publishs the first color lithographs by Georges Redon, Signac, Luce, Anquetin, etc. (Source: Lugt, L. 1193, Collector’s marks).
